Kit and Home Contents Insurance

Most insurance policies have not been designed to respond to the specific needs of the Armed Forces but together with Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance plc, PAX Insurance offers a kit and home contents policy designed specifically for service personnel and their families.

PAX Insurance is available for:

  • serving members of the Armed Forces, reservists, MoD affiliated personnel and their families
  • British civilians employed under contract with HM Armed Forces, consultants and persons employed under contract with HM Armed Forces
  • retired members of the Armed Forces and previous serving members residing in the United Kingdom
Cover can be arranged for your contents in store, contents of a property you are letting, contents of holiday homes and continued after you leave the Armed Forces. Section 4 - Legal expenses
Up to £40,000 to pursue or defend your legal rights - Monthly costs = £1.00

The rates shown on this summary apply to standard risks and are subject to the individual assessment of a proposal form completed by the proposer. Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) currently 5% will be added for risks located in the UK. A documentation charge of £15.00 will be added to all policies issued or amended (excluding change of addresses). If the premiums are paid by monthly direct debit an instalment charge of 6% (14.4% APR) will be added to the rates shown above.

Summary of cover

Military kit

This section must be selected if you are a serving member of HM Forces. The cover provided is worldwide (including transits) against loss of, or accidental damage to, service uniforms, kit and equipment owned by you or on permanent issue to you. Claims are settled on a new for old basis. The minimum sum you can insure for is £3,000 but you must make certain that the amount you select will cover the full replacement value of all items. If your sums insured do not reflect the full replacement value of your property, you may find that Insurers will only pay a proportionate amount of your claim.

In addition, we provide (at no additional charge) cover up to:

£5,000 Uniforms, kit & equipment on temporary issue to you, for your own use
£25 Loss of your service identity card

Optional additional cover March Out / Out Muster. (Charges which you are liable for due to loss or damage to contents, fixtures and fittings or any MoD arranged accommodation for up to £10,000 effective 90 days after start date.)

Personal possessions

All applicants must select this section. The cover provided is for loss or damage occurring anywhere in the world to your personal possessions such as clothing, jewellery, watches, cameras and sports equipment. The minimum sum you can insure for is £1,500, but you must make certain that the amount you select will cover the full replacement value of personal possessions owned by you and members of your family. Individual items over £2,500 must be specified. In addition, we provide (at no additional charge) cover for:

Home contents

The contents of your home (such as furniture, furnishings, domestic appliances, electrical goods) are covered under this section for accidental damage and loss or damage by specific causes such as: theft, fire, flood, storm, burst pipes, lightning, explosion, earthquake, collision, riot, vandalism and other perils. The minimum sum you can insure for is £9,000 but you must make certain that the amount you select will cover the full replacement value of the contents of your home. The following additional benefits are included at no extra charge:
  • Costs of temporary alternative accommodation and storage if your home is made uninhabitable by specific causes, up to 30% of your sum insured
  • Up to £750 for loss of metered water and oil
  • Loss of freezer food due to temperature changes caused by accidental breakdown or power failure
  • Loss of title deeds up to £500
  • Loss or damage to contents in the open up to £500
  • Loss or damage to contents temporarily away from your home in a bank, safe deposit, occupied private house, MoD or other building, up to 30% of the sum insured
  • Loss or damage to contents temporarily away from your home whilst with you or members of your family at boarding school, college or university, up to 30% of the sum insured
  • Accidental loss or damage whilst in transit by professional removers or military transport to a new home (including storage in furniture depositories during removal or whilst serving overseas), Unless you have selected and paid for worldwide cover, the policy will only cover removals within the United Kingdom
  • Loss or damage to television, radio or satellite receiving equipment
  • Loss or damage to keys and locks
  • Loss or damage to prams and wheelchairs up to £500
  • Automatically increased sums insured for Christmas - additional £3,000 during December. Weddings - additional £3,000 for one month before and after the wedding
  • Fatal accident - if the main proposer dies within 90 days as a result of fire, explosion, lightning, thieves in the home or in an accident whilst travelling anywhere in the world as a fare paying passenger in a road or rail vehicle, the policy will pay up to £5,000
  • Unaccompanied postings or detachment - loss of or damage to household goods and domestic equipment whilst you are serving anywhere in the world, up to £1,000
  • Business equipment up to £5,000

Legal liabilities

As the occupier of your home, an individual or perhaps an employer of domestic help, you may be held legally liable for accidental injury to another person or for damage to their property. This section of the policy will pay damages and legal costs up to £1,000,000 (or £5,000,000 for injury to an employee). This section includes:
  • your legal liability as a tenant for damage by specified causes, up to 30% of the sum insured you select for your home contents
  • payment of damages awarded to you in a UK court, which remain unpaid three months after the date of the award (provided that there is no appeal pending), up to £1,000,000
